Coding and Robotics in Brillantmont Curriculum

In autumn 2018, Brillantmont International School added robotics and programming courses as part of their core curriculum for grade 8 and 9 students. Brillantmont is the only school in Switzerland to make such a course a compulsory part of the learning programme.

The courses will help students to develop connections between science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics, the STEAM fields. The aim for them is to develop critical thinking skills that are needed to find creative solutions to real-world problems using a basis of science and mathematics.

8th Grade students are learning robotics by using Arduino platform to develop and code their micro-controllers, eventually leading to full functioning robots with buttons, wheels and possibly legs!

9th Grade students are building their own digital game or application by using Python, one of the most popular professional programming languages. Python is easy to pick up, whether a student is a first-time programmer or experienced with other languages. They will enjoy writing short programs with Python, work on group exercises, and eventually build a game of their choice.

For the delivery, Brillantmont International School is working with TechSpark Academy and EPFL, based in Lausanne. The founder of TechSpark Academy Marta Gehring (who is a Brillantmont alum) shares her vision of the digital and her delight in being able to work together with her former school.

With the new courses, Brillantmont students are going to be in a fantastic position to make the leap into our technological future.
