At Aiglon, students from around the globe learn to live side by side. But what\u2019s it really like when your best friend has ideas that are literally from the other side of the planet?<\/h4>\n<\/header>\n

Alice Cervini and Victoria Li come from opposite ends of the Earth (Milan and Hong Kong). They speak different languages and have different outlooks, backgrounds and attitudes. What could they possibly have in common? Well, Aiglon is renowned for bringing people together, and so it proved in this case \u2013 with a little extra help from quarantine.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we first met, we didn\u2019t like each other very much,\u201d admits Victoria. \u201cAnd under normal circumstances we might never have become friends. But when the first quarantine hit and everyone in our friendship groups left, it was just us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I saw Victoria was here, I thought, \u2018Let\u2019s go talk to her\u2019,\u201d says Alice. \u201cAt one point she was quarantined so I took my chair and sat outside her room and we just spent afternoons talking.\u201d \u201cFor two weeks we spent every minute together,\u201d continues Victoria (the two swap and finish each other\u2019s sentences). \u201cWe started talking about what we have in common and found it was so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUsually, my parents would come most weekends to see me,\u201d finishes Alice, \u201cbut with Covid they couldn\u2019t, so I realised I\u2019d have to sort of make myself a family.\u201d (At which both girls \u201cawww\u201d and hug and laugh.)<\/p>\n

It may have been given a 2020 twist, but that\u2019s the Aiglon way \u2013 a whole range of different nationalities coming together in perfect harmony. The melting pot atmosphere can make for a learning curve like no other \u2013 and can build friendships that enrich lives above and beyond the usual school experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn my old school, I\u2019d be quite quiet,\u201d says Alice. \u201cBut here, I knew I\u2019d have to make friends or go home. I think they like putting different nationalities together as roommates, and we\u2019ve come across so many in our house \u2013 French, American, Japanese, Russian, Nepalese \u2013 all round the world!\u201d<\/p>\n

STRONG BONDS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Antonio Crosswell Goudet and Issei Akita (both Belvedere, Year 10) arrived at Aiglon at the start of the 2020 school year, hailing from Mexico City and Tokyo, Japan respectively. It was the first time boarding for both, and they laughingly admit to feeling some worry about adapting and finding friends. As it turned out, though, they hit it off immediately after being placed in the same room.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was pretty natural,\u201d says Antonio. \u201cThat first day we shared our social media profiles, and by the end of the week he started to open up and we found we had a similar sense of humour.\u201d So much so, that when Issei cut himself slicing bread, his first instinct was to go to his friend for help.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought he was playing a prank, with ketchup or something,\u201d says Antonio. \u201cIt was only when I saw that blood coming out that I realised we needed to get it cleaned up and get him to the nurse, who quickly patched him up and he was fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe sharing rooms often creates really strong bonds,\u201d says Mr Mike Cornish, Aiglon\u2019s Service and Spiritual Life Leader. \u201cBut you\u2019re unlikely to be with the same person for your whole school life. All houses use different systems, but most rotate roommates termly, so you get to meet new people and get used to making it work. You need to learn about people\u2019s sensitivities, their idiosyncrasies, their cultures, and really get to know them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aiglon has multiple ways of helping students get to know their peers better, Mr Cornish explains. \u201cWhether you\u2019re into music and DJing, technology, recycling or the outdoors, there\u2019s a place you can do that. Student interaction isn\u2019t just built around lessons and expeditions. There are lots of activities that foster friendships across house and across year groups.\u201d Those same activities can both strengthen and be strengthened by preexisting friendships: Victoria and Alice encourage each other to go to the gym; Issei and Antonio \u201cgo running and play football together, and we\u2019ve both signed up to try climbing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Expeditions, by their very nature, require a degree of mutual reliance that solidifies relationships. \u201cYou\u2019re with that group 24\/7,\u201d says Mr Cornish. \u201cEvery time you cook or put up a tent you are sharing responsibility for providing food and providing shelter. You\u2019re relying on other people for your safety \u2013 and they rely on you.\u201d \u201cBut it\u2019s not just about physically supporting each other,\u201d says Victoria. \u201cIt\u2019s about sharing memories of getting to the summit together. That moment you take a photo of you both to say, \u2018We got here, together\u2019.\u201d \u201cOn Ex, you\u2019re put into random groups, so you have to spend the whole day with people you\u2019ve maybe never spoken to before,\u201d says Alice. \u201cAnd if we don\u2019t find someone to talk to,\u201d adds Victoria, \u201cwe talk to the teachers, and that\u2019s another kind of friendship.\u201d<\/p>\n

CULTURAL EXCHANGE<\/strong><\/p>\n

That willingness and ability to be open to others is something Aiglon works hard to foster, not least during daily Meditation, which can be given by students and staff alike, as well as visiting speakers. \u201cYou feel you\u2019ve really learned something about the person,\u201d says Mr Cornish, who is responsible for programming the Meditations. \u201cI spoke about part of my family being Indian and the racial abuse some family members experienced; others have talked about overcoming disappointment, loss or physical challenges. The stories are incredible, personal and applicable. But some are funny and light: you might hear about a skill, a passion or someone\u2019s family life. They go a long way to developing a culture where people are open and accepting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Service trips are another way of directly experiencing the home countries and cultures of fellow students \u2013 or actively sharing one\u2019s own, such as the planned trip to Istanbul organised by two Turkish students to help in a local school and experience the sights of one of the world\u2019s great cross-cultural cities \u2013 or the online charitable relationship supporting small-scale farmers being established by an Indian student in her home country. \u201cWe don\u2019t have to suggest these things,\u201d says Mr Cornish. \u201cStudents come to us under their own steam.\u201d<\/p>\n

But as well as the more formal activity, many students find just chatting is the best way for cultural exchange to happen naturally. \u201cThe other evening,\u201d says Alice, \u201cVictoria started talking about her family traditions. I was super-interested, because in China they seem more defined, whereas in Italy they\u2019re not so formal.\u201d And Issei and Antonio have been learning each other\u2019s languages and cooking speciality dishes for each other. \u201cThere are a lot of differences about a school like this that make you more tolerant and patient,\u201d says Antonio, \u201ceven if that\u2019s just hanging out at weekends.\u201d<\/p>\n

CONNECTIONS ACROSS THE WORLD<\/strong><\/p>\n

Of course, while boarding school places students into greater proximity during their school days, it inevitably scatters them further apart once they leave. Aiglon\u2019s graduates maintain connections across entire continents. Antonio and Issei have already worked out how far apart they\u2019ll be once they leave \u2013 \u201cit\u2019s seven hours\u2019 time difference,\u201d they chorus in mock dismay. Issei is already planning a trip to Mexico. \u201cI know a lot of graduates who still stay in touch, even after so long,\u201d says Victoria. \u201cThe connections they\u2019ve built here are that strong.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed, these two international pairs are already planning how they can stay teamed up a little longer. \u201cEvery term in Belvedere you write down the names of people you want to room with,\u201d says Antonio. \u201cIt\u2019s not guaranteed, but they look at things like if you help out around the house and have good marks.\u201d \u201cSo, he helps me a lot with prep and with my English,\u201d says Issei. \u201cI keep him out of trouble,\u201d laughs Antonio. \u201cAnd he helps me with Maths. He\u2019s so incredibly good at it.\u201d Alice and Victoria, meanwhile, are applying classroom skills to their campaign to stay as roommates. \u201cWe\u2019ve written an essay making our case,\u201d says Alice. \u201cIt\u2019s two pages long and is a proper PEE \u2013 point-evidenceexplain \u2013 argument,\u201d says Victoria. \u201cWe\u2019re determined!\u201d<\/p>\n

And as Aiglon\u2019s alumni can attest, friendships built on the mountain endure. \u201cAs long as you stay the person you are, and don\u2019t try and change yourself, you will attract people who want to have a long-term friendship with that person,\u201d says Victoria. And Alice agrees: \u201cNo matter who you are or where you\u2019re from, there\u2019s always someone who\u2019ll come and talk and be your friend,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd, often, those friendships are made forever.\u201d<\/p>\n
