One of the most crucial aspects of selecting a college or university is finding the ‘right fit’, which can be challenging without personally visiting the campus. While obtaining information online is convenient, it fails to provide the tangible experience and “feel” of the institution. Therefore, visiting the university is a worthwhile endeavor that may require time, effort, planning, and financial resources. This is a perfect thing to do over the summer vacation, when some universities have open days, and students have more time to travel to different countries!
The LAS university advisors strongly recommend visiting universities that students may be considering applying to whenever possible, because when students step foot on campus, they can observe the buildings, residence halls, classrooms, athletic facilities, and dining halls firsthand. This sensory experience is invaluable because it allows them to envision themselves living in that environment for the next four years. Exploring the campus in person will give students a more accurate representation of what it offers.
Fortunately, most colleges and universities provide campus tours and information sessions (called Open Days at European universities) for prospective students. A campus tour is typically led by a student guide who will walk students and parents through the facilities, providing insights into student life, academics, campus culture, and more. These tours are often accompanied by information sessions conducted by the university’s admission staff. During these sessions, families can learn about admission requirements and specific offerings and gain a better understanding of the institution. It is an excellent opportunity for both students and parents to ask questions and gather relevant information.
Some institutions also organize Open House or Open Day events during the fall. These larger gatherings offer a closer look at campus life and provide opportunities to interact with current students, faculty members, and administrators. Additionally, certain universities arrange special events tailored to specific academic interests, programs across campus, or athletics opportunities. They may even offer chances to interview with admission representatives or current students, attend classes, or have overnight stays with current students. It is essential to contact the universities that potential applicants are interested in, explore their offerings, and plan accordingly. If multiple schools of interest are in close proximity, families may consider visiting them simultaneously.
While visiting a university requires a significant commitment, there are compelling reasons to embark on a college/university road trip. Firstly, it allows students to assess not only the campus but also the surrounding area. They can gauge what off-campus life is like, evaluate transportation options to and from campus, and explore potential internships and community engagement opportunities in the vicinity.
On campus, students and parents will have the chance to gather first-hand knowledge about student life, the admission process, academic offerings, and faculty interaction. This information is valuable not only for their personal insights but also for crafting compelling personal statements or college essays.
In essence, visiting a university provides possible applicants with invaluable one-on-one time with admission counselors, staff, and faculty members. This direct interaction allows them to ask specific questions about career services, financial aid, academics, and dining options, among other crucial aspects of their university experience. Therefore, taking the initiative to visit a university can greatly inform students’ decision-making process and enhance their understanding of the institution they may potentially call home for the next several years.
